At sea, safety requirements for ships are of the
utmost importance. This also applies to fire
protection measures. After all, in the event of
fire, rapid escape is usually impossible and the
prompt arrival of help from outside cannot be
expected.
In light of the various types of fire risks which
exist on board ships, specific solutions are necessary for the space or object to be protected
in order to ensure optimal fire protection on
board.
Areas that deserve special attention include
machine rooms and rooms with electrical and
electronic devices, such as control rooms and
switch cabinets. In the event of a fire, the failure
of machines or devices on board a ship at
sea can have fatal consequences. In such risk
areas, fire suppression systems must put out
fires quickly and residue-free, in order to ensure
that sensitive equipment is not damaged.
If you’re building a new vessel or
retrofitting an existing one, the best fire
protection decision you can make is to
select a Gielle Marine Fire Suppression System
with Novec 1230 fluid.
GL Novec 1230 Marine Fire Suppression System designed for use with 3M Novec 1230 fire protection fluid is engineered to provide clean, fast, people-safe protection for applications requiring a “green” solution to fire suppression. The system includes detectors, a control unit, agent storage cylinders, piping and discharge nozzles. The system is computer calculated to provide system discharge within 10 seconds.
Here’s why:
Life Safety. Novec 1230 fluid, like halon
1301 and other halon replacements, works
by interrupting the fire on a molecular
level, not by taking oxygen from the
protected space. It is one of the preferred
fire suppression agents for protection of
shipboard spaces where crew or other occupants may be present.
Environmental. Novec 1230 fluid has an
ozone depletion of potential of zero and
the lowest global warming potential of any
clean agent available making Novec 1230
fluid the natural choice for customers
concerned about the environment.
Marine Approvals. Gielle Marine Fire Suppression Systems
with Novec 1230 fluid
are approved for use in marine applications
such as machinery spaces and flammable
liquid storage areas by major regulatory
agencies.
Weight and Space. Gielle Marine
Engineered Systems weigh less and take up
less space than either carbon dioxide or
water mist systems, so they provide more
fuel-efficient solutions to shipboard fire
protection with more room for
revenue-generating cargo or passengers.
General description
GL Novec 1230 Marine Systems with Novec 1230 fluid
are used
to suppress fires in specific hazards or equipment
where an electrically non-conductive agent is
required, where agent cleanup creates a problem,
where extinguishing capability with a low weight is
desired and where the hazard is normally occupied.
GL Novec 1230 Marine Systems with Novec 1230 fluid
are intended to protect
spaces containing the following hazards:
• Class A: Surface type fires; wood or
other cellulose-type material
• Class B: Flammable liquids
• Class C: Energized electrical equipment
3M Novec 1230 fire protection fluid
Novec 1230 fluid is a fluoroketone developed
specifically by 3M for fire protection use. It is a
compound of carbon, fluorine and oxygen
(CF3CF2C(O)CF(CF3)2). It is colorless, low-odor and
electrically non-conductive. It suppresses fire by a
combination of chemical and physical mechanisms
without affecting the available oxygen.
This allows
personnel to see and breathe, permitting them to
leave the fire area safely. Novec 1230 fluid is
approved for use in occupied spaces by the U.S. EPA. Marine regulations require that personnel are
evacuated before system discharge.
Novec 1230 system hardware
Novec 1230 fluid is stored in steel cylinders
superpressurized with nitrogen to 25-bar (360 psig).
The cylinder valve assembly is equipped with a
supervisory pressure switch connection for
monitoring cylinder pressure.
A pressure gauge and a safety disc are fitted to the valve in accordance
with DOT requirements. Other system components
include mounting brackets, control heads, pull
stations, pilot cylinders, flex hoses, discharge delays,
sirens, check valves, nozzles, etc. System controls can
be configured to comply with all marine regulatory
requirements.
One of the advantages offered by NovecTM 1230’s high boiling
point is that it produces a very low vapour pressure, enabling it to
be transported in lightweight totes or drums as opposed to steel
pressurised containers. This allows NovecTM 1230 to be readily air
freighted and as both initial filling and recharging operations are
possible by simply pouring the fluid into containers, prior to
superpressurising,
the filling operation is far simpler than with traditional
high pressure gases.
The system piping design is
accomplished with Gielle flow calculation software,
which performs the complex flow calculations
necessary to achieve agent distribution with a
discharge time of ten seconds or less.
Handling
There's a distinct advantage in handling a liquid agent-one that isn't pressurized and doesn't have a high vapor pressure at room temperature. 3M Novec 1230 fire protection fluid has a boiling point of 49°C (121° F). It can be shipped safely and effectively, without any restrictions, by air at a moment's notice in bulk quantities. In the shop, Novec 1230 fluid is easier to use than pressurized gas. Simply transfer the fluid from the container to the system cylinder, using a simplified closed loop process to avoid contamination. Then, superpressurize the cylinder with nitrogen.
The product is ideal for use in total flooding applications, localized flooding systems, directional spray type applications and may be used in portable extinguishers for specialized applications. But in addition to the conventional methods of super-pressurization using nitrogen, 3M Novec 1230 fire protection fluid also lends itself for use in pump applications because it is a liquid.
Replacing halon with novec 1230
fluid
3M Novec 1230 fire protection fluid is a next-generation halon alternative designed to balance industry concerns for performance, human safety and the environment, which makes Novec 1230 fluid the first option to non-sustainable technologies:
•Zero ozone depletion potential
•5-day atmospheric lifetime
•A global warming potential of 1
Its low acute toxicity, combined with high extinguishing efficiency, give 3M Novec 1230 fire protection fluid a significant margin of safety, even at relatively high extinguishing concentrations. This makes Novec 1230 fluid ideal for occupied spaces including engine and pump rooms, paint lockers and communication and control centers
3M Novec 1230 fire protection fluid offers a number of important advantages over other clean agents and CO2 in marine applications.

Environmental Profile:
Non ozone-depleting
Five-day atmospheric lifetime
Global Warming Potential of 1
This environmental profile is unmatched by
any other halogenated agent, and helps make
3M Novec 1230 fire protection fluid
today's long-term solution for protecting
your high value assets.
The Gielle Marine System is the most optioned system as a Halon replacement system. Often, the system can be dropped into existing pipework reducing retrofit time and costs.
Despite having a high boiling point, NovecTM 1230 is able to be
effectively vapourised over a wide range of hazard temperatures.
It is therefore available to protect most hazards traditionally
protected with Halon 1301 and will be particularly important in
Marine applications and others where high margins of safety and
long term sustainability are considered to be crucial features.
The physical properties of each
halon alternative determines how much agent is required to
provide an equivalent level of protection. NovecTM 1230 will
require approximately twice as much agent by weight as the
equivalent halon system, although end use design
concentrations will be similar, resulting in minimal increases in
storage space for the containers.
Existing pipework may need to be replaced or supplemented,
although the exact requirement for any particular system can
only be determined after a detailed review of the existing
installation.
Marine approvals
In addition to land-based approvals, the Gielle
Novec 1230 System engineered fire suppression system is approved for use in
marine applications such as machinery
spaces and flammable liquid storage areas by the
